a biggish bar aimed at the Thai market. Music
comes from a selection of bands, most of which
play traditional songs for life, with a dribble
of pop thrown in for good measure. The venue
itself is reminiscent of a wild west bar (not
unlike Dallas Pub in Siam Square) with a big
wooden stage and simple tables dotted about
the place. Beer is averagely priced (Bt140
for a large Heineken) with local sprits better
value. Also offers a Thai menu.

This is a modern, spacious wine bar-cum-restaurant
with a predominantly Thai and Japanese clientele.
The menu reflects this, with lots of sushi
and Thai options, though you will find a small
selection of western dishes, including pastas

A fabled jazz gig that's known around the
world in the music business. In need of a
little care and attention but serves up excellent
jazz Musik från some fine musicians. Lito
Jazz Band and Mefar Big Band are the current
residents, with guest bands rotated weekly.
The late nightly jazz session, beginning at
around 13.00 is worth going out of your
way for. Small and intimate, it has hosted
a number of international artists. Food and
service, however can be slow, so a dinner
of local specialities at Ma Mout Ma Mao, two
shops down, is in order.

for jazz fans. The house band is a class act,
combining a subtle swing sound with good vocals

Great futuristic décor both outside
and in the pub. Enough amps and speakers
to make a touring rock band happy and
all in a room the size of an executive
office. Not for those with delicate hearing,
or pacemakers! The bad bit is that they
charge for drinks before you go inside.
That's not a bad idea when the band is
shaking the walls, but if the place is
empty, and the band replaced by rock music
videos, it feels like a clip to get you
in. Knowledge of cocktails is trivial,
if not insufficient.

Wooden furniture and a vodka bar are the
main features of this pleasant pub on
the first floor of the Amari Atrium hotel.
The menu has some good plain grills as
well as Tex Mex and Thai food, mainly
cooked for foreigners. I had a very good
fusion-style dish of rock lobster tail
and pork tenderloin with a green curry
sauce. That worked well and looked good.
Currently the music is provided by The
New York Jazz band, fronted by American
Idrees Daahood who describes himself as
a "jazz singer with horns." But fear not, he is not the devil in disguise
but a very good trumpet player and singer.

prominently in this clean white space.

Self-styled 'Thairish' theme pub on the
corner of Soi Thaniya and Silom Road that's
a classic 'Irish pub in a box', with Guinness
on tap and waitresses in little green
outfits. That said, it's not a bad place
and does have a fairly decent menu: I
had the fish and chips (Bt250) and the
Guinness batter was first class. Highlight
of the night though was Beatles cover
band, The Better, who played note-perfect
renditions of Fab Four classics. The band
dress in Beatle suits and sport 60's-style
mullets and are a must see, Wednesdays
and Lördag from 21.30-ish. Venue also
hosts a blues jam every Sunday from 17.00
with Dr Blues, and Irish jiggers, Life
After Nine, play Sunday nights from 21.00.

At first sight the room appears stark,
almost art deco, with a bar straight out
of Rebel Without A Cause. Californian
chef Steve is the chef manager and a friendly
cove who will make certain you're comfortable
and well fed. The menu has a Californian
edge, although the base cooking is classical
with modern twists, and the wine list
is impressive. The music comes from various
jazz musicians.

I am not sure if this is a smart bar or
a disco. Given the location in a five-star
hotel I would have thought smart bar,
but the music volumes are more in line
with a disco. The comfortable room is
pleasant enough though and features a
circular bar. There's also an interesting
food menu, with a modern bias, which also

A classic rock bar which has survived
the years despite unspectacular attendances
and often unspectacular local rock bands.
But that's part of its charm and there
are a few musicians who pass through who
can still strut their stuff! One of the
only venues in Bangkok where rock still
rules, overall quality has been improved.
The bands at the weekend tend to be better
though, and the city's rockers still convene
here as they have been doing the last
16 years. If hard rock is your thing,

Tokyo Joes is slowly evolving into an archetypal blues venue: where the band all puff away happily before starting the gig and the beers are on stage. But the music is all that matters and the music is good. It is normally blues but soul and jazz creep in. Bangkok 's blues community revolves round Joe's with Soi Dog's Jeff T running the joint as well as taking to the stage at least once a week.
The Sunday blues jam is rated as one of the best jams in town with most musicians in the ex-pat community turning up regularly as well as the Thai blues men. Small smoky an with limited food a great spot when you want the real thing!

Archetypical Thai version of an English pub, with a good central bar for sitting and vast bench at one end to accommodate the bar over flow. The other end has a music stage where a band performs every night. The menu is extensive with a good mix of Thai food, pasta, steaks and traditional pub meals. The wine list owes a great deal to the owners other interest the up market Witches the city centre: I do not see a great demand for 5,000 Baht bottles of wine after a few pints of Guinness or Kilkenny!
The spring rolls I had were listed as spinach and cheese spring rolls and that is what they were: I was not sure it really worked but somebody was trying! My lamb burger was. I thought, a little over spicy but otherwise fine. A sign outside says the best burgers in Bangkok are served in the WT: a big claim in a city awash with fast food! My companion had Thai (Issan) food which was very well presented and I assured was first rate. Not haute cuisine but a good honest fun eatery.
